The Democrat candidate won California, in spite of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s endorsement for his opponent.
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s support was not enough. Barack Obama defeated John McCain by a large margin, even in California. According to the latest polls, the Democrat candidate won 57% of votes, versus 41% for his Republican opponent John McCain.
This state was very important. It is the most populated state and the winner takes 55 delegates. George W. Bush didn’t win in 2000 and in 2004 but this year, McCain hoped that his closeness with Arnie could be decisive. California is indeed Schwarzenegger’s state. The former actor has been governor since 2003. He is also one of McCain’s good friends. So his endorsement was highly sought after by the Republican candidate, from the primaries. But Schwarzenegger remained quite neutral throughout 2007 and early 2008, because he was also close to another candidate, Rudy Giuliani. So his official endorsement was only announced in February. It was thought to be a boost for Senator McCain's campaign. The governor is very popular in California and both men spoke about their environmental and economic concerns.
Last week, Schwarzenegger tried to help his friend’s ailing campaign. During a McCain campaign event in Colombus, Ohio, the former Mr Universe wanted to ridicule the democrat candidate: “ Every year in March I come here to organise the Arnold Classic, which is all about building the body and pumping. That's why I want to invite Senator Obama because he needs to do something about those skinny legs. I'm going to make him do some squats. And then we're going to make him do some biceps curls to beef up those scrawny little arms ».
But fortunately, the presidential election is not a Mr Universe contest and voters don’t look at your muscles before making their choice…
