Around 20 million American people have already voted in what is called “early voting”. Barack Obama is in the lead in these ballots according to a few polls.

Barack Obama has won the first round. 20 million American people have been using this means of voting for two weeks. It concerns 32 states in the United States. No vote totals are announced until Election day but the early indications clearly favor Obama.

On Friday the newspaper the New York Times published a poll which said that Barack Obama was leading by 14 points over the Republican candidate John McCain. The Internet website earlyvoting.com has released polls based on first results. Some of these ballots have indeed been counted. In spite of seals in the ballot boxes there are some leaks. About a third of voters are expected to vote early this year, up from 22% in the last presidential election. It could change the final result of this election.

Early voting polls in favor of Obama are especially interesting in the key states. The Democrat candidate has taken the lead over John McCain in Ohio, Nevada, Florida, Iowa and Colorado. These “swing states” will be crucial in the final result of this presidential election.
This trend is particularly true in North Carolina. Around 1.6 million people have already voted in this Republican electoral stronghold. 54% are registered Democrats and 29%t are Republicans. In Florida, the state where absentee ballots overwhelmingly favored George W. Bush in 2000, 2.6 million people have voted: 45% for Barack Obama and 39% for John McCain. In Nevada, Iowa, Colorado, New Mexico and Georgia, the polls of early votes are all in favor of the Democrat candidate.

However as Democrat officials have been saying for a few days, the election is not over. Some political observers said that early voters are almost all young people and voters from a minority group. These voters are known as Obama fans. Moreover there are a majority of floating voters in this election. And it is probably the floating voters more than early voters who will make a difference in this election.
