After 18 months of campaigning, the Democrat Barack Obama and the Republican John McCain have started their final contest this morning. Tomorrow, the Americans will choose their president for a new four-year-term. The two candidates decided to take advantage of each second of this crucial day.

Altogether, they have visited thirteen states in 24 hours. The two candidates have been multiplying meetings day and night to convince the last floating voters. Above all, they have chosen the swing states like Florida or Ohio to end their campaign. For both of them, the watchwords are « mobilization » and « gathering ».

Barack Obama has planned to go to three states: Virginia, North Carolina and Florida. His running-mate Joe Biden has to meet the voters of Pennsylvania, Ohio and Missouri. Even the wife of the candidate, Michelle Obama, is holding two public meetings in Colorado and Nevada. This round is quite different from the past presidential elections. Obama goes above all  to Republican territory where his rival is trying to defend his advance. The senator for Illinois wants to avoid a demobilization of his voters. « We can’t take the liberty of resting a minute, an hour, a second », he said during a meeting in Ohio last weekend.

On John McCain’s side, the schedule is also busy. He has decided to hold seven meetings: in Florida, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Indiana, New Hampshire, Nevada and last of all at midnight in Arizona, his stronghold. Sarah Palin, his running-mate, has to go to Ohio, Missouri, Iowa, Colorado and Nevada. The Republicans chose all these states for the last day because of their decisive role in the poll. John McCain still believes that he can win tomorrow, even if the polls give him as the loser. To put all possible chances on his side, he even asked his supporters this morning to grant him « one more mission ».
