The last time 66% of Americans voted was in 1908 ! McCain vs Obama has outdone the turnout of John F. Kennedy election. How can one explain this interest ? Who are Barack Obama's voters ?
Young people are more involved in these elections than in 2000 and 2004. Barack Obama won the votes of those under 30 by 66%. Vincent Michelot, a specialist of the American presidency, says that people between 18 and 25 have voted 50% more than in 2000 because Barack Obama represents a new generation of Democrats: « The party is changing and giving the state an important role without removing the concept of responsibility.»
Above all, young people had an important place in Barack Obama’s campaign. An extremely active network of militants travelled all around the country to encourage people to vote. Barack Obama has literally, to use Nicolas Sarkozy’s expression, « arraché chaque voix avec ses dents » (grabbed each vote one by one).
In 2000, 40% of Latinos –the largest minority in the country– voted for George W. Bush. This year, in New Mexico, Nevada and California and also in Florida, Texas and Arizona, 66% of Latinos have voted for Obama. What happened ?
In 2006, they demonstrated against the laws against illegal immigrants with banners ‘Today we walk, tomorrow we vote'. And they did… » said Frederick Douzet, a specialist on political issues. For months, the Republican policy on immigration has put Latinos off – and they make up 15% of the US population.
John McCain was popular in the Hispanic community but he reneged on his promises to reform immigration because of the pressure of his party and conservative voters.
The most important element in this election is that Barack Obama talked to everybody. His campaign was dealing with economic issues. « Since 1932, no other American election has taken place in the heart of a crisis like this one. » said Vincent Michelot. 62% of voters said it’s the most important issue facing the US.
